Rockford May 2009

Short update today. Rockford showed with a full side and picked up a couple of Milwaukee players. Oconomowoc had 23 players to get in and being a friendly, we did.

The game started pretty much like the rest of our games this Spring. With lots of offense, Trey making conversions, and pretty poor defense. Their big center did some damage early and after about 10 minutes, the score was 14-14. Things settled down only slightly and Rockford was able to put up two more tries in the first half and we only had one. Halftime score: 24-19 favor of Rockford.

Unke let everyone have it at half and basically said we were playing like pansies. We didn't do mass substiutions but more gradual. We had some very nice, fast rugby early in the second half. We had loops, quick passes, and ball-in-hand stuff (pop passes). But it wasn't enough and we were down 36-33 more than midway through the second half. We were scoring, but still allowing them long runs and break-aways. A typical play was when we were pounding close to in-goal only to turn it over, three quick passes by them to the edges and it goes the other way for a try.

Trey slotted a penalty to tie it up.

Then Chad came in and all on the sideline were on Chad watch. Sure enough, 5 minutes later, their fullback is chucking punches to Chaddie's head. Chad insists he didn't deserve it. Huh. Anyway, they played a man down for the rest of the match and we kept substituting old, experienced, but fresh legs in the forwards. And won by two converted tries. Whew.

That's how I saw it.
